The agony of Nigeria,As Oil Producer..SUBSIDY Blues FOR Laugh

A few days ago, many Nigerians woke up to find fuel increases gone up to 100 %. Ironically, blames are being placed
on Government as being insensitive to the plight of its citizens. While blames are being bandied around, it must be stressed that fuel subsidy removal has always come up from time to time as a government strategy to provide more
amenities for its citizens.Previous administration attempted to put in place this policy, but other interests were accorded higher priority. It appears to me that Jonathan's administration may not be interested in Second term and so he is taking the bull by the the horn by this drastic measure.
Many reasons have been adduced for taking the action now. One such reason is Government claim that sharp practices allegedly perpetrated by a cartel in the oil industry has led to a rip-off, put at one trillion naira.
Moreover some greedy marketers ,who have little or no regard for human lives are said to be converting or diverting
Dual purpose Kerosene (DPK) to aviation fuel( JET A1), since JET A1 is sold at N152 per litre as against N50 per litre ,Domestic.
Fuel subsidy means more employment for other countries that supply Nigeria fuel ,while thousands of our graduates remain unemployed.,depletion of our foreign reserves etc.We should put an end to the exploitative role of the greedy marketers , who have thrived on inflated bills on fuel supplied to Nigeria. Ghana,Nigeria,s next door neighbour is said to have removed subsidy. Niger is building a refinery, perhaps with the sole aim of supplying fuel to Nigeria!
At the height of this crisis, concerned interest group have mounted massive propaganda to counter government action. Thus in the pictures below, they have tried to paint the picture in different ways in order to evoke sympathy.
The pictures are funny, riduculous and provide good laugh to many.
I would like readers draw meanings from the pictures presented.. The pictures would present amusing spectacles to foreigners. In one picture, a girl is lifting a book or Bible in celebration after siphoning fuel from a car!

Nice article on the sorry state of affairs in the country. The pictures are proof that nigerians can still find some humour in the situation, despite all the pain and suffering

Nice article indeed and the pictures really give some laugh. How I wish Nigerians will understand the full implication of the subsidy removal and cooperate with Mr President.

The situation of Nigeria is not funny at all. It is very sad. But Nigerians always find ways to cushion their sufferings and pain by making a joke out of their painful situation. In the first picture the woman is actually praying that the water in a basin should turn into petrol just as Jesus turned water into wine. The pictures show various individual solutions to the fuel crisis.

Pope Benedict XVI addressing the German parliament quoted a saying of St. Augustine in the City of God that "A Nation State without law is nothing but a band of robbers. That is exactly what the Nigerian government has become, a band of robbers looting the nation mercilessly.

I and just like many other Nigerians believe that fuel subsidy be removed but then things should be placed in proper perspective. You donot put the cart before the horse. Introduce the palliatives first, fight corruption and reduce the cost of governance before asking the masses to make sacrifice.Data shows that previous budgets on subsidy were around 350 billion naira and for 2011, 450 billion was budgetted but 1.34 trillion naira was claimed to have been spent and which happened to be an election year, meanwhile there was no supplementary budget for that matter and mr president is yet to try any government official suspected to have connived with the so called cabals. Thus who is fooling who? The major issue is lack of trust in the leadership by nigerians.

I totally agree to the comment of Eke Olugu. Things should be done in the proper order. The government may not be able to probe any case of corruption, because as Ndi Igbo say You don't blow hot coal into flame with mouth full of water.
